"Get Out of My Emergency Room" — an older term for a patient who is medically complex, frequently admitted, and notoriously difficult to discharge. Usually said with a sigh and a resigned smile.
Code Brown 💩
No further explanation needed. Every nurse knows. Every nurse has a story. None of them will tell it at dinner.
Walkie-Talkie
A patient who is ambulatory and alert — the unicorn of a busy floor. When a nurse says "thankfully they're a walkie-talkie," it means one less thing to worry about on a chaotic shift.
The Bermuda Triangle
That mysterious zone of the unit where call lights, staff, and supplies all seem to disappear simultaneously. Every floor has one. No one can explain it.
Nurse Brain 🧠
The sacred handwritten (or printed) cheat sheet nurses carry with patient info, vitals, tasks, and notes. Losing your nurse brain mid-shift is the nursing equivalent of losing your phone, wallet, and keys at the same time.
Cluster Care
The art of bathing, medicating, repositioning, and assessing a patient all in one efficient visit to minimize disruptions. A skill that takes years to master and is deeply satisfying when executed perfectly.
